George J. Mavrookas, chief executive officer and founder of Agape Behavioral Healthcare, is redefining behavioral health treatment in South Florida through an approach that blends the service ethos of hospitality with clinically robust programs for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Drawing on a family legacy in the restaurant and hospitality industries, Mavrookas has built a network of boutique-style treatment centers that prioritize intimate settings, compassionate care, and a strong internal culture over large institutional facilities.
In recognition of his distinctive leadership and the impact of the organization’s boutique, hospitality-informed model of care, Mavrookas has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who, a leading publisher of biographical profiles highlighting accomplished professionals across industries.
Agape Behavioral Healthcare offers medical detox services and a full continuum of inpatient and outpatient programs designed to support individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and alcoholism. The organization’s care model is tailored to meet a broad range of behavioral health needs while emphasizing personalized, environment-focused treatment. In fewer than eight years, the company has expanded to three locations and assembled a team of more than 100 employees—reflecting both organic growth and the rising demand for person-centered care.
Second-Generation Roots Shape a Hospitality-Driven Vision
Mavrookas believes the organization’s differentiation lies not in the number of facilities it operates, but in its philosophy about how treatment should feel for both clients and staff. The centers are intentionally designed as smaller, more intimate environments that move away from the traditional hospital aesthetic in favor of a boutique atmosphere where clients can recover with dignity and privacy.
“At the core, the most important thing to us is the hospitality-to-healthcare approach,” he said. “We want to create a paradigm shift in the industry by building spaces that feel safe, welcoming and human—not clinical or overwhelming.”
Mavrookas credits much of his work ethic and entrepreneurial mindset to his upbringing as a second-generation Greek American. His grandparents immigrated to the United States with limited formal education but an unwavering determination to succeed. Both of his grandfathers built careers in hospitality and real estate, and Mavrookas spent his early years working in family-owned restaurants, catering halls, and a hotel, where he gained firsthand lessons in service, resilience, and accountability.
Those experiences shaped his first business venture in Florida, where he opened a restaurant and spent five years helping expand the family’s hospitality portfolio before ultimately transitioning into healthcare.
Culture, Environment, and Community at the Center of Care
Mavrookas’ emphasis on environment is particularly evident at the organization’s intracoastal locations, which feature serene waterfront views, lush natural surroundings, and generous outdoor spaces that allow clients to enjoy fresh air and quiet reflection throughout treatment. One facility includes a dock that encourages simple grounding activities, such as fishing, while another offers a spacious outdoor area overlooking the water and bordered by a natural preserve and nearby park. These tranquil, resort-like settings stand in contrast to traditional treatment facilities located in dense urban corridors and are designed to promote calm, comfort, and emotional safety.
Equally central to Mavrookas’ strategy is the belief that staff well-being is the foundation of effective client care. Agape Behavioral Healthcare has been recognized as one of the Best Places to Work in South Florida for companies of its size in both 2023 and 2024 and has also received a specialty award for exceptional employee engagement. These honors reflect the organization’s continued commitment to cultivating a supportive, growth-oriented workplace culture.
“We believe we have to put our team, the company and the company’s culture first so our staff can, in turn, take care of the clients,” Mavrookas said, noting that he views the organization’s culture as one of its most important differentiators.
After earning both a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration from Lynn University, Mavrookas applied his business training to establish Agape Behavioral Healthcare in 2016, aligning his entrepreneurial ambitions with a mission to create meaningful change for individuals and families facing crisis. While he values education, he emphasizes that sustained effort and lived experience ultimately drive success.
“Hard work is going to beat your education every day,” he said. “You can have all the degrees in the world, but until you have built something from the ground up and understand the struggle, you do not truly know what it takes.”
Beyond his work leading Agape Behavioral Healthcare, Mavrookas remains actively engaged in the community. He supports organizations such as 4KIDS of South Florida and collaborates with Lynn University to provide internship opportunities for pre-service counseling and psychiatry students. He views these partnerships as an extension of the organization’s mission to create opportunities for others, whether for individuals seeking recovery or emerging professionals preparing to enter the behavioral health field.
Outside his professional commitments, Mavrookas is a devoted father who prioritizes maintaining balance and staying grounded in the values that have guided both his life and career.
