The Food and Care Coalition in Provo.
One in five American adults faces a mental health challenge. Among those experiencing homelessness, that number rises to nearly eight in 10 — showing the powerful link between mental illness and the risk of losing stable housing. At the Food & Care Coalition, we see this every day.
That’s why we are so grateful for Wasatch Behavioral Health, our on-site partner, and its WATCH program (Wasatch Assistance Team Counseling the Homeless). This outreach and treatment program provides life-changing mental health services to individuals who are homeless and struggling with mental illness — right here at our facility, where support is most accessible.
WATCH Program Manager Monte Memmott leads a team of 18 dedicated mental health professionals who provide counseling Monday through Friday at the coalition. Each month, they meet with about 250 individuals. As Monte explains, “We are proud of the fact that we are able to help transition about 10 people a month into permanent housing.”
Helping our clients address mental health needs is crucial to stabilization, recovery and, ultimately, self-reliance. At the Food & Care Coalition, we believe every step forward must be grounded in dignity, respect and love. The successes we see are proof of the power of our collaborative, holistic approach to serving those in our community experiencing poverty and homelessness.
We are deeply thankful to Wasatch Behavioral Health and all our on-site partners who help us fulfill the mission of the Food & Care Coalition: to alleviate hunger and diminish the plights of poverty for those who enter our doors. Our work extends beyond meals — we strive to find suitable housing, teach financial accountability, nurture personal growth and help every client reach their full potential.
