The psychiatrist who treated Twisha Sharma, the 31-year-old woman found dead at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal, has spoken out on the case for the first time.
Speaking to Aaj Tak, Dr Satyakant Trivedi confirmed that Twisha had visited his clinic but declined to share details of her treatment, citing patient confidentiality and the sensitivity of the case.
“The case is very sensitive and, as a professional, if the court or police ask me, I will certainly share the course of treatment with them, but not with the media,” he said.
Dr Trivedi also said he had provided Twisha with a counsellor’s contact number for further consultation.
He added that patients often approach his clinic with complaints of stress related to marriage or pregnancy, and noted that stress and mood swings have become increasingly common in today’s lifestyle, without commenting specifically on Twisha’s case.
MYSTERY SURROUNDING DEATH
Dr Trivedi’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding the 31-year-old’s death.
Twisha’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, had claimed that Twisha was undergoing therapy and that her prescriptions suggested she suffered from schizophrenia. She had also alleged that her daughter-in-law was addicted to drugs and frequently experienced mood swings.
However, her family has denied the allegation.
Twisha’s family have accused her husband and in-laws of prolonged mental and physical abuse, dowry harassment and using influence to weaken the investigation.
Twisha, originally from Noida, is learnt to have sent out messages of distress to a close friend shortly before her death, which has been ruled as suicide.
Her relatives have also alleged that she was pressured over employment after marriage and over her pregnancy, and have questioned the police investigation, demanding a second post-mortem and a court-monitored probe.
However, Singh has rejected the allegations against her family and her son, Samarth Singh — who remains on the run — and accused the deceased’s family of running a vendetta aimed at sending him to jail.
