ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Mental disorders worldwide have doubled since 1990, affecting more than a billion people, according to a study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

The study found that mental disorders are now the leading cause of disability worldwide, with anxiety and depression being the most common issues. People ages 15 to 19 have the highest rates of mental disorders.

Heart attacks in young male athletes

New research debunks the belief that young, fit men are having heart attacks in high numbers. A study of over a million men in Sweden found that heart attacks among young male athletes are more rare than previously thought.

Researchers said the benefits of running and other intense physical activity outweigh the risks.

Sleep and dementia connection

A University of Rochester study found that while people sleep, the body works to clear waste from the brain. When people are stressed or depressed, sleep is disrupted, leading to a buildup of waste in the brain and increasing the risk of dementia.

Cardiovascular disease and aging can also disrupt sleep.
