Bay Minette City Council has approved a memorandum of understanding between the city and AltaPointe Health Systems to provide virtual mental health crisis support for the Bay Minette Police Department.

Through the partnership, police officers will have access to technology that allows them to connect individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis with qualified mental health professionals in real time while in the field, a news release said. The program is designed to enhance crisis response efforts, improve access to appropriate care and support safe and effective de-escalation during mental health-related incidents.

The initiative will provide officers with direct virtual access to behavioral health specialists who can assist with crisis assessments, guidance, recommendations and coordination of appropriate mental health resources and services.

Bay Minette Police Chief James Rosier Jr. emphasized the importance of the partnership and its impact on public safety and community care.

“This grant provides our officers with an immediate, life-saving bridge to professional mental health support right from the field,” Rosier said in the release. “As part of our commitment to serving as guardians of our community, putting these iPads directly into the hands of frontline personnel allows us to instantly connect individuals experiencing a crisis with qualified specialists. True public safety is measured by how secure and supported our residents feel, and this technology ensures we deliver compassionate, efficient, and effective care when every second counts.”

City officials said the partnership reflects Bay Minette’s continued commitment to strengthening public safety through proactive community-focused solutions and collaboration with healthcare professionals.

In addition to supporting individuals in crisis, the program will also provide specialized training opportunities for officers to further enhance their understanding of behavioral health issues and crisis de-escalation techniques.

The agreement between the city and AltaPointe Health Systems is scheduled to begin June 1.
