A Scranton man who fled from Taylor police Saturday afternoon crossed into oncoming traffic and put others at risk, police said.
Police charged Dawson Alan Card, 26, of 2320 Pond Ave., with fleeing officers and endangering others, including the passengers in his own vehicle.
Officer Elijah Izak was monitoring traffic in the 700 block of South Keyser Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. when he spotted Card in an SUV speeding southbound, according to a criminal complaint.
Izak attempted to stop the vehicle, but instead of stopping, Card continued to speed south while passing other vehicles and crossing over the solid double line into oncoming traffic.
Card turned right onto Walnut Street and stopped, but then continued to speed up Walnut Street, turning right onto Laurel Lane with police following him.
As the vehicle came to a stop on Laurel Lane, the rear driver’s side door opened and Marquitta Ward emerged distraught.
Chad Thomas then exited the passenger side of the vehicle and approached police. He was also upset.
Card stepped out of the vehicle and initially failed to comply with a police directive to return to his vehicle, which prompted Izak to draw his service weapon, police said.
Card then complied and returned to the driver’s seat.
A records check indicated Card didn’t have a valid driver’s license.
Officers noted that Card endangered the passengers in his vehicle as well as other citizens as he fled officers.
Card told police the vehicle belonged to his girlfriend.
He is also charged with driving without a license.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on June 10 before District Judge Christopher Szewczyk.
