As well all know, whether we like to admit it or not, social media is very addictive and can cause some serious mental health harm. That’s exactly why the state of Minnesota has passed this law requiring social media platforms to provide a mental health warning label.
This law passed last summer, but will now take effect on July 1st, 2026. So what will this look like for us?

Minnesota’s New Social Media Mental Health Warning Label Law
The law will require social media platforms to display “a conspicuous mental health warning label” each time the platform is accessed.
When the message pops up it’ll also provide mental health resources, like the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You’ll need to either close the app or close the warning message in order to proceed to the app.
Social media platforms are not allowed to only have this warning in their terms and conditions, it must be a separate message that pops up each time you open the app. So we will be seeing this message any time we want to access Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.
Social Media Mental Health Warning Coming July 1st
I’ll be really interested to see how social media platforms execute this. I guess we’ll find out on July 1st.
I’m really glad this is happening, though, because there’s plenty of research out there that shows us how bad social media is for our mental health.

Aside from this being an obvious warning of that each time you open the app, I wonder if it’ll cause people to use social media less. I mean, if a message pops up every time I open Instagram saying ‘hey, FYI, this can be bad for your mental health’, I feel like eventually I’d start opening it less. And, honestly, that wouldn’t be a bad side effect of this new law.
