WINDSOR, Maine (WABI) – A woman in Windsor began a nonprofit in 2023 in hopes of relieving stress and improving mental health among her peers. She did it in a way that might not come to mind immediately, and that’s animals.

Following an incident that led to trauma in Cara Cribb’s hand and developing PTSD, she was struggling to find impactful help and support that aligned with her needs.

“I thought, ‘There’s got to be another way, I can’t be the only person facing this,” said Founder and Executive Director Cribb. “Goats entered my head, and yea, it’s been a goat story since.”

She realized quickly the support she was receiving, could be shared amongst others.

So, the process of building Anchor ME Harbor began in 2020, officially getting nonprofit status in 2023.

“Not everyone heals the same way, we’re a very out-of-the-box non-clinical mental health center, if you will,” responded Cribb. “So, we’re trying to find those people who would fall through the cracks like I did.”

Cribb, who is now up to over 100 animals from geese to pigs to sheep, is a peer support specialist with her mental health rehabilitation certificate.

She believes not all forms of treatment belong in an office.

“A lot of them don’t want to get that help because they might feel weak or they can’t afford it, and so, creating this where it’s different and non-judgey, not your typical, they can come and just take what they want from it,” commented Cribb.

The organization hosts both structured activities but also encourages just sitting and sharing a space with the animals.

Cribb says the main mission is to rid of the stigma surrounding mental health but also the stereotype of livestock animals.

“Most people think they have just one purpose, but they really don’t. They have such personality really,” answered Cribb.

She adds most of the animals with the nonprofit are male and therefore expendable with farmers. Others are disabled and have found a home with Anchor Me Harbor.

“They wouldn’t have had a life otherwise, but they are all so special,” said Cribb.
