Thanks for having me on Dr. Mike and for continuing to make mental health part of the conversation 🙌🏽
man I appreciate this so much – to see a physician so concerned with person-first language, but the going further to wonder if that actually is reinforcing an emphasis on identity is just a level of care and critical thought that I find so lacking in the healthcare system and is so so appreciated. Love Dr. Mike!
Mbti is junk but big5 isnt? He does not know what hes talking about lol😂
This is an old video, so I am curious if either doctor has changed their views on the subject of thoughts having an impact on mental health. I found the general vibe on the subject to be very dismissive here. Saying “thoughts don’t matter” is a mind blogging thing to say as a mental health professional, or even as a family doctor.
You can’t really think that going through life being ungrateful & negative would have the same impact as going through life focusing on gratitude and being positive, do you?
From everything I have found, there IS a lot of scientific data to support that you need BOTH – change their thoughts anddd actions. Not just one or the other.
I did appreciate them saying that if it works & isn’t harming anyone, keep going. Just didn’t love the diminishing of how powerful our feelings & thoughts really are. ❤
i have a idea when new therapy app has been released just like betterhelp does but with good quality and very supportive towards vulnerable people and using trained professional who will never ghost you.
I loved the mushroom yeast infection scenario… hilarious!
I think corny is my type!
I got a better help ad on this lol
I am happy to see people talking about all this, but I do not agree with mental health care and the most important thing is the relationship. I have had different people do that who did not pick up on my (severe!!!) add! People tend to treat just depression, anxiety, eating disorders or addiction and so on, and not understand the link to different neurodiversity ruined my life severely! And YouTube saved me as it was the only thing where I found the information. I agree that it is important to look for experts and not people who have it. I’ve seen (in multiple countries) psychiatrists , phychologists, social workers and so on an no one “saw” my adhd until I did at age 45! I was happy to have found the reason behind my struggles, got it confirmed, twice, and then found no one could help me as no one is properly trained. I found I (always) knew way more than the person supposed to be trained on the subject. I found family doctors dismissing it, wanting me on anti depressants. And so on. It’s absolutely insane the problems patients encounter who just want the right support and help building a life. Absolute insanity. No one sees or understands connections, no one knows enough about treatment. Governments concentrate more on rules and anti abuse an financial aspects concerning stimulants (crazy as studies show it isn’t that helpful for people without adhd but that is not cummunicated) in stead of truly trying to help the person that needs them. I can go on and on about my experiences with other this, but I think it is all wrong in most places. Psychiatrists saying a patient came for addiction then said might have adhd and saying we concentrate on the addiction if not I’d do you a disservice is insane when everyone knows both are often linked so if adhd good luck with treating the addiction. Or people throwing things on character flaws or just being hormonal. Hormones are connected as well. Again. I’ll stop here, but I wish clinicians would get actual training concerning neurodiversity, comorbidity and so on. More than a couple of hours or days. I have no access to to accurate and helpful care and I think it is a problem for many (not everyone), many. And yes!!!! Exactly, look at functioning !!! Please in schools and pediatricians!!! I wildly agree! In my experience adhd and asd are not being picked up though. I know you said might, but that is a light might depending on where you live. People also say stuff like well adhd is not seen as that problematic, we don’t see that big of problems with it, in schools for example, wild, look at those untreated and wildly misunderstood kids later on. Some might do ok but the risk of huge struggles and comorbidity is all over societies, just not seen in relation to adhd enough. Depression, anxiety, RSD (!!), addiction (self medicating), social struggles, low self esteem, masking, problems in school or at work and so on. And if not teachers, someone from outside who comes in a day per class and evaluates with the teacher. It’s not about labels it’s about understanding and helping.
I also had training to be a adhd coach and an important thing was repeated endlessly was you’re not a coach to give the answers, but to help patients learn about how their specific brain, to help find their strengths and how to use them in different aspects of their life. The answers should be found by patients through questioning, questioning perspectives and understanding. We do not treat through therapy or any problem that requires a psychologist or something different than a coach. Understanding your brain and using it to your benefit in stead of going against it is my work with patients who struggle with and lack understanding about their adhd. Seeing more clearly what you do and what you can implement it. And done in a way that the way of thinking can be used for other things that come up after coaching sessions as well. Practical.
Hesitant parents should be concerned about what happens if you do not asses these things properly, what are they giving their child to work with. Especially without understanding family dynamics are often difficult, school, socially, and so on as mentioned. Also the non stop comments the child’s gets will hurt them. Try harder, sit still, you’re always too loud, too much, too this, too that, stop this, don’t do that and so on. Non stop, is not helping at all. So yes, you can choose that labels and identity are concerns or just understand and what you are dealing with and help your child.
My identity is just me.
I agree that there should be mental health milestones through the lifespan to help identify, prevent, and address issues early.
There was a situation in which a girl killed her brother. The girl was not held accountable for the crime. As an adult, this now woman killed three of her coworkers, which is when the killing of her brother was made known. It is important to address the early signs/red flags in children early to try to prevent, treat and manage the bigger issues and mental health issues in the future.
Really appreciated this conversation between two people I respect!
Another thoughtful episode from the thoughtful Doctor Mike! I do think life coaching has its place, btw. I've met some very competent and intuitive and helpful life coaches.
@drali Thank you so much Dr Mattu 😊🌼
Better help ad being attached to this video is just the cherry on top😭😂 as a “victim” of the betterhelp app, can’t wait to see that app fall. It was insanely expensive for something that is supposed to be the “cheaper option” and they don’t even take health insurance is even worse. I never got official diagnoses through it because they told me they flat out legally couldn’t like girl what? Mind you this was back in 2021 but still. And it was $300 a month then, I can’t imagine what outrageous price they charge now
So glad I came across this, one of my favourites so far.
I don’t agree with Dr. Ali about how we should just refer out like if that’s not a big deal. As a psychotherapist you’re supposed to provide the best therapy you can obviously based on what form of psychotherapy. However, just because you don’t come in contact with how to treat bipolar disorder we are trained in what therapies work for what disorders so basic research will help guide you and reviewing peer reviewed research in treatments. So you could still treat what you can with your capacity. I was a clinical mental health counseling student now I switched over into clinical social work and I do not think the dr. Ali is right. For example a physician can’t just refer me out for not knowing how to treat a cut on my arm because he never experience that specific issue but using their resources and knowledge he could figure it out.
Re: Meyers Briggs test: my mood fluctuates so hard that I will neeeever get the same answer on the same three days lmao
