COLUMBIA – In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) highlights its ongoing commitment to promoting awareness, understanding and access to mental health resources. Throughout May, audiences can engage with a variety of programming and digital resources designed to encourage conversation and support overall well-being.
South Carolina Public Radio’s (SC Public Radio) Health Focus, airing Monday through Thursday, is produced in partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and highlights the importance of seeking care and support. Hosted by Bobbi Conner, the series features conversations with medical professionals, including MUSC psychologist and researcher Dr. Tracy Stecker, who examines patterns in how individuals pursue mental health treatment.
Teachable Moments, hosted by Dr. Rénard Harris of the College of Charleston, airs Fridays during Morning Edition and All Things Considered on SC Public Radio. The program offers practical guidance for families and educators, including discussions on the growing prevalence of adolescent mental health challenges and the need for early awareness and intervention.
As part of its My Telehealth series, SCETV also highlights the segment “Text, Talk & Heal Postpartum,” which focuses on innovative approaches to supporting maternal mental health. The segment explores Listening to Women and Pregnant and Postpartum People, a free program offered through the Center for Telehealth at MUSC. The initiative provides text-based mental health screenings throughout pregnancy and up to 12 months postpartum, along with a complimentary virtual visit with a registered nurse shortly after hospital discharge. Participants are also connected to community-based support through SC Thrive.
SCETV’s digital platforms also feature a curated collection of episodes from Tell Me More with Kelly Corrigan, offering thoughtful conversations centered on emotional well-being. Highlighted episodes for May include “Sleep Your Way Well,” “Bad Days, Tough Seasons or Clinical Depression” and a conversation with South Carolina mental health leader Deborah Blalock.
In addition, SCETV continues its focus on youth mental health. The latest episode of SCETV Safe Space, “Triggered: Understanding the Roots of Anger,” is available to watch on-demand and offers an in-depth look at how emotional intelligence can help teens better understand and manage their emotions. From self-awareness and communication to empathy and self-control, the episode explores how emotional literacy can positively influence relationships and decision-making.
Premiering this fall, Solbird Sessions is a new series that further extends SCETV’s commitment to mental health through the lens of music and creativity. Created, hosted and produced by Columbia artist TiffanyJ, the series combines live musical performances with guided conversations that examine the relationship between artistic expression and emotional well-being. Each episode features a guest artist performing alongside the house band, Rod Foster & Company. Through moderated discussions and mental health-informed segments, the series creates space for reflection, resilience and healing. Mental health expertise is woven throughout the series. Board-certified music therapist Alison Hughey provides pre-recorded segments exploring the role of music therapy in emotional regulation, while licensed counselor Chris Greene participates in in-studio discussions with artists and audience members.
Through these initiatives and more, SCETV continues to provide content and resources that encourage awareness, connection and meaningful dialogue around mental health across the state. For more information, view SCETV’s Mental Health Awareness Month programming and resources.
