Therapy is crucial for mental health, but stigma, culture, and access can hinder engagement. Muskegon Family Care shares tips for finding the right therapist.

There is no question that the answer to good mental health is often therapy.

While people have become more comfortable talking about mental health and accepting that therapy is critical to healing, there is also a greater NEED.

Gwen Melton is a Behavioral Health Therapist with Muskegon Family Care and she joined us to talk about the rewards of therapy for both patient and provider.

Melton said there are several challenges to keeping people engaged and retained in therapy: stigma and shame, cultural/family beliefs that discourage therapy, access barriers, motivation and readiness.

Melton had advice for people who may be looking for treatment to find it:
*Check your insurance for in-network providers
*Use online directories
*Ask for referrals from your primary care doctor
*Use Employer Assistance Programs
*Identify your needs
*Contact 3-5 potential therapists to ask about their approach, and find one you can connect with and trust
