SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) — A Mahoning Valley nonprofit agency for children’s mental health and education services is celebrating another expansion in the Valley.
Alta Care Group has served the social, emotional, behavioral, educational and physical well-being of children, adolescents, young adults and families in the community for 50 years.
It celebrated its new Salem location on Thursday with an open house.
“We are very excited about expanding into Columbiana County and helping to fill the gaps in the community as it relates to children and adolescents’ behavioral health care,” said Alta Care Group CEO Vince Paolucci. “It’s exciting to take the next natural footprint for us, and expand services.”
The need for the kinds of services Alta Care Group provides is something that hasn’t slowed down.
“We’ve been in discussion with the Columbiana Mental Health Board and even some of the providers about gaps in the children’s and adolescent realm of services out here, so it kind of makes sense for us to help fill those gaps,” Paolucci said. “This office is going to focus specifically on therapeutic behavioral support, which is a very community-based service counseling. We’re also adding psychiatry here twice a month.”
When it comes to adolescents, Alta Care Group will go up to age 26.
“A lot of our young, early 20s folks are struggling with a lot of different things that are still in our realm of work as we work with children, and there’s a lot of transition that happens in that age group as we all know,” Paolucci said. “I think it’s just it just makes sense for us to kind of help them get into the adult world, help them transition, and give them the assistance that they need with whatever they’re struggling with.”
The new building, shared with Lighthouse Counseling, is still just the beginning of what group hopes to continue achieving.
“As we start with some of these core services, there’s other services we provide also, such as respite care, peer support services, so those are coming in the future, hopefully, because those are gaps in the service,” Paolucci said. “But those are also gaps in the area of what we understand, so we’re hoping to expand on those areas as well. We just appreciate the Columbiana Mental Health Board, the Columbiana Family Children’s First Council. They’ve been very helpful in welcoming us to the county, working with the other providers, and helping to fill these service gaps in that area.”
